Thanks to the press
Without the help of newspapers, magazines, radio and TV, it is not certain that AA would
have reached the lives of several million people. From the very start in 1935, AA has
collaborated well with people in the press and other media, who have respected what we
do and acknowledged our traditions.
We do not claim to be experts, but we have unique experience both of what it means to
be alcoholics and of achieving good, sober lives.
The principle of anonymity does not prevent us from speaking with journalists, but we do not come forward with our names and pictures. AA's Service Board also has members who are not alcoholics, and who can represent us in public.
According to the Actis’s report «Societal costs of alcohol use», alcohol use and abuse cost Norwegian society between 80 and 100 billion kroner per year.
About us
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues
or fees for AA membership. We are self-supporting through our own contributions.
AA is not affiliated with any sect, religious denomination, political agency,
organisation or institution. AA will not engage in any controversy, neither endorses
nor opposes any cause.
Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other
alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
Is AA religious?
No, AA is not religious, but AA's 12 steps to recovery are based on spiritual principles in the sense that they focus on inner change and personal growth, rather than on religious dogmas or medical treatment.
What AA does not do
- Does not keep membership lists or any other form of archive
- Does not participate in or contribute to alcohol research
- Does not affiliate with any other outside enterprises, although AA members, groups, or the General Service Office may cooperate with them
- Does not follow up or check up on its members
- Does not interfere in medical or psychiatric matters
- Does not provide nursing services, places in detoxification clinics or treatment facilities
- Does not provide housing, food, clothing, employment, money or any other form of welfare or social services
